1st Symposium of Rafts4Biotech (R4B): Lipid Membrane Eukaryotic & Prokaryotic Biology

About event

This symposium is organized in the framework of the Rafts4Biotech consortium training activities and will take place in Madrid, September 18-19, 2018 and will be dedicated to membrane and membrane lipids biology.

Membrane organization is crucial for the cell viability and the correct function of many membrane-associated cellular processes. Understanding membrane organization and the lipid-proteins interactions that participate in membrane assembly is thus essential to address questions related to both eukaryotic and prokaryotic biology. Nonetheless, the mechanisms involved in membrane organization are far from being understood, as they often require an approach within the cell biology and lipid biochemistry interface that is not inherent to many laboratories. This symposium brings together some of the most relevant researchers in lipid biochemistry and bacterial membrane organization to discuss their contribution to the field and the progress in membrane biology in past years. This event also aims to provide a space with which current and future challenges in membrane biology can be debated.

The R4B Symposium will include sessions on lipid systems biology, membrane antibiotics and membrane lipid organization. Additionally, through short talks, e-poster presentations and roundtables, participants will have the chance to learn all about lipid microbiology and engage in great scientific discussions. If you are a young researcher working on this field and are interested on attending our summer school stay tuned and save the date!

RAFTS4BIOTECH

Rafts4Biotech (R4B) is a European research project that aims to optimise bacteria for the industrial production of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food-related compounds.

Funded under European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Rafts4Biotech is a consortium of 12 partners form 9 different countries with a funding of 7,5 M€ for 4years.

The R4B's strategy relies on confining the production of these compounds to specialised areas of the microbe’s membrane called lipid rafts. These recently-discovered regions present an ideal setting to avoid interferences with bacterial metabolism and viability, thus increasing productivity.
